Palestinians stage anti-US rally
PALESTINE: Thousands of Palestinians have held an anti-US
rally in the West Bank, criticizing US veto that nixed a UN resolution
on illegal Israeli settlements. More than 3,000 demonstrated in Al
Manara’s main square in Ramallah and condemned US President Barack Obama
administration’s veto.
Fatah Central Committee member Mahmoud al-Alul said that this is a
clear sign that the US does not seek freedom for Palestinians, adding
that “It [the US] supports Israeli injustice, oppression and
occupation.”
Some of the demonstrators chanted “Get out, Obama!”
The other 14 UN Security Council members — China, Russia, Britain,
France, Brazil, Bosnia, Colombia, Gabon, Germany, India, Lebanon,
Nigeria, Portugal and South Africa — voted in favor of the resolution on
Friday. The US had also cast two vetoes in 2006 when the Council tried
to pass Arab-backed resolutions that demanded Israel end its military
operations against the Gaza Strip.
Much of the international community opposes Israel’s settlement
expansions, which are labeled illegal under the international law, in
the occupied West Bank and East al-Quds (Jerusalem). In a statement on
Saturday, the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) also slammed
the US veto, saying that the US move “will only encourage Israel to
continue its violations.” Prss TV |
