A hide of a rare species of a leopard was found by
Horowpothana police last Sunday. The leopard hide was in the
possession of K Thilakaratne of Kapugollewa, Dutuwewa.
Police arrested him and produced him in Court yesterday.
Police said that they apprehended the suspect with the hide
on a tip-off. Sources revealed that the hide had been
removed from the animal very recently. Police suspect that
the man had killed the leopard using a trap to sell the
hide.

Meeting with Japanese FM
Discuss developments in Sri Lanka
Plantations Industries and Human Rights Minister Mahinda
Samarasinghe met Japanese Foreign Minister Seiji Maehara in
Tokyo recently. Minister Samarasinghe briefed the Japanese
Minister on current developments in Sri Lanka. The Japanese
Foreign Minister was also briefed on the formulation of the
National Action Plan on the Promotion and Protection of
Human Rights which is expected to be finalized and presented
for Cabinet approval. Charge d’ Affaires of the Sri Lankan
Embassy in Tokyo Esala Weerakoon was also present. |
Attacker surrenders
Parliamentarian Upeksha Swarnamali’s husband Mahesh Chaminda
Walewegama has surrendered to the Mirihana Police yesterday.
He was on police hunt over the alleged attack on the UPFA MP few days
ago. Mahesh went missing after the attack on the MP causing injuries to
her face. Upeksha Swarnamali underwent treatment at the Sri
Jayawardenepura Hospital.

Protest against Indian fishermen
Fishing families in Jaffna staged a protest against Indian fishermen
straying into Sri Lanka’s territorial waters transgressing International
Maritime Law.
Fishermen started the protest outside the Indian Consul General’s
Office yesterday morning requesting immediate mediation of the
authorities of both countries to seek preventive measures to the issue.
The fishermen reiterated that their livelihoods have been threatened.
Long-term action is needed to prevent possible clashes among
fishermen in both countries while assuring their territorial waters.

Principals told:
No donations from parents
Wayamba Chief Minister Athula Wijesinghe requested Wayamba Principals
not to take any donations from parents for the schools.
The Chief Minister told media Monday that there are many complaints
against principals of Wayamba. Most of the principals collect money from
each child for their uniform.
He said he received so many complaints that popular schools in
Kurunegala accept Rs 100,000 for an admission.

Drug shortage

Patients receiving treatment at Galnewa rural hospital are faced with
a drug shortage.
There is shortage of drugs such as asthma, rubella, whooping cough
immunisation vaccine as well as pure water, buildings and beds for some
time.
The water is also of very poor quality and is brownish colour. The
people in the area urge the North Central Provincial Health Ministry to
take action.
Seed paddy to double

The Agriculture Ministry has made arrangements to double the
production of vegetable seeds and seed paddy during the next two years.
This program is carried out under the instructions of Agriculture
Minister Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena. All government farm lands will be
utilized for this.
Seed production of paddy, green gram, kurakkan, soya beans, cowpea,
ground nuts and big onions would be expanded.
All Provincial Departments of Agriculture, Agrarian Services
Department and the Export Corps Department would be instructed to work
hand in hand to produce quality seeds for the local farmers’ community.

The Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Ltd (Lake House) Hindu
Association has organized a special Hindu religious pooja to commemorate
the 125th birth anniversary of Lake House (ANCL) Founder D R Wijewardene
at the Arulmigu Siwasubramanium Kovil at 9.30 am on February 23.
Four injured in school van crash
Kalutara District Roving Corr.
Three schoolchildren and a woman were seriously injured after being
knocked down by a school van on the Maggona, Halkandawila main road
yesterday morning.
The injured were rushed to the Nagoda hospital in the same van. One
of the schoolgirl’s and the woman are in a critical condition. The
Payagala police has apprehended the van driver along with the van.
Investigations are continuing.

Counterfeit cigarettes destroyed

The Excise Department yesterday destroyed a large haul of counterfeit
cigarettes valued at Rs 90 million.
The stock had been confiscated through raids in the country.
Excise Department Superintendent Prabath Jayawickrama said over 4.5
million cigarettes brought from Italy, Kuwait, India, Pakistan and
Singapore were destroyed. All these cigarettes had been brought to the
country illegally and no permission have been taken to sell them.
Fined Rs 80,000

A suspect found guilty of keeping 78 bottles of illicit liquor in his
possession was fined Rs 80,000 by the Chilaw District Judge Jagath A
Kahandagamage.
Mundalama Police prosecuted.
Fisherman’s body found near wadiya
Puttalam Group Corr
A body of a fisherman was found by the Puttalam Police near a ‘fish
wadiya’ near the Nirmalapura coast in Mampuri.
It was identified as that of Warnakulasuriya Waduge Cyril (49) of
Thoduwawa, Madurankuliya. Puttalam District Judge and Magistrate Sesiri
Herath who held an on the spot inquiry into the death on Sunday directed
the Chilaw JMO to conduct an autopsy and submit a report.
He also directed Puttalam police to conduct investigations into the
death and arrest the suspects involved if there had been any foul play. |
