Independence celebrated in Sweden

The Sri Lanka Embassy in Stockholm held the 63rd Independence Day celebrations at the Embassy premises on February 4 with the participation of nearly two hundred Sri Lankan expatriates in Sweden.

The ceremony commenced at 9.30 am with the hoisting of the National Flag by Ambassador Ranjith Jayasooriya. One minute silence was observed in honour of war heroes who sacrificed their lives to preserve the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the co-untry.

The program consisted of lighting the traditional oil lamp, multi-religious observances and reading of National Day Messages of the President, Prime Minister and External Affairs Minister. Ambassador Jayasooriya delivering the welcome speech outlined the significance of the economic independence of the Nation in the post conflict era.

He said all Sri Lankans have a responsibility to contribute to the development of the Motherland.
