Dynamic middle order batsman Mahela Jayawardena
scored Sri Lanka’s fastest hundred in a World Cup match as the
former champions launched their 2011 campaign with a massive 210-run
victory over Canada in their opening group ‘A’ fixture worked off
under lights at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Stadium in
Hambanthota yesterday. The former captain recovered well from a
nervous start to play a magnificent one hundred from 81 deliveries
which helped the home side to rattle up a formidable 332 for 7 from
their 50 overs having elected to bat first. bCanada in reply folded
up for a disappointing 122 runs from 36.5 overs with the two opening
bowlers Nuwan Kulasekera and Thisara Perera capturing three wickets
each.

ICC must allow papare, papare bands
While appreciating the good work done by the
International Cricket Conference in allowing the 2011 World Cup to
be conducted in the sub continent and while commending them for
banning certain items from be brought into the venues of play, it is
inexplicable the banning of the papare,papare bands.

Kiwis hand hapless Kenya 10-wicket mauling
New Zealand thrashed Kenya by 10 wickets in the
World Cup on Sunday, making a mockery of the African nation’s
campaign to feature at the slimmed-down 2015 edition. Fast bowler
Hamish Bennett finished with 4-16, his best figures in nine one-day
internationals, while Tim Southee and Jacob Oram took three wickets
each to bowl out the minnows for just 69 off just 23.5 overs.
