Fake gold case: Three nabbed

Anuradhapura Police Special Crime Investigation Board (SCIB) arrested
three persons who sold pieces of metal (Maranchi) as genuine gold for Rs
five million to a businessman from Badulla.
The three accused who are from Badulla, Mahiyangana and Haliela had
planned and co-ordinated the illegal deal. The main suspect who had been
hiding in Eliyadiulwewa in Eppawala had fled the area, Police said.
The arrested who are gold merchandisers have contacted the
businessman to sell the goods for Rs five million.
They had shown the businessman five pieces of genuine gold as samples
to mislead him.
The businessman satisfied with the sample gold had exchanged two kgs
of gold (1,200 pieces) for a cheque of five million rupees on February 1
at Kelediulwewa, Eppawala.
The suspects had cashed the cheque at a bank in Kekirawa. The
businessman with his new wealth went back to Badulla where he found the
two kgs to be iron pieces.
On a complaint made at Badulla and Anuradhapura, SCIB on February 10
police led the investigations to nab the three suspects. Anuradhapura
SCIB is investigating. |
