Thilanga asks ICC to reconsider
Former Sri Lanka Cricket and Asian Cricket Council President, Former
ICC Director and Parliamentarian Thilanga Sumathipala in a letter to the
International Cricket Council president Sharad Pawar has requested that
the ICC reconsider the Eden Gardens Stadium as a world cup venue.
In his letter Sumathipala points out that playing at Eden Garden is
the pride for any Indian or International cricketer.
“It has staged the 1987 World Cup finals. In the 1996 World Cup, Sri
Lanka won the semi finals in front of over 110,000 spectators and we
have played the first ever World Test Championship there. “For any young
cricketer playing at Lords in London, the MCG in Australia and Eden
Gardens in India is a dream come true.”
The letter also states that the COC of the ICC must make every
endeavor to make play possible at Eden Gardens rather than finding a way
not to play. “We Sri Lankans are willing to put 100 percent support
behind the Board of Control for Cricket in India and to request the ICC
to reconsider playing at the historical Eden Gardens Cricket Ground.” |
