In the All Island School Inventors’ Competition 2010 conducted by Sri
Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science, Colombo University in
December three new inventors of Don Pedric MV, Horana of the Horana
Education Zone have won Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals. For first second
and third places.
Suraj Prasantha Kulatunga, a student of Grade 11 won the first place
for the invention of an electronic and telecommunication security
system. Second place was won by R P D Madushanka of Grade 11 for the
invention of a house security system and the third place was won by R A
M M S Rupasinghe of Grade 11 for the invention of a water level
detector.
The winners of this competition were assisted and directed by W
Keirthi and P K Manel, teachers of the Electronic Unit of the school,
under the direction of Principal of the School Pathmasiri Perera. The
new electronic Telecommunication Security System presented by Suraj
Prasantha at the Kalutara district new invention competition in 2010,
conducted by the Ministry of Education won the first place and it won
the third place at the All Island new inventors’ competition in August
last year.
He won the first place receiving the Gold medal for his new invention
at the All Island New Inventors’ competition conducted by the Sri Lanka

“There are many electronic systems in operation. They are very
expensive. My system is much more advanced” regarding his new invention
Suraj Prasantha said. He was made this invention by adding a 3G phone
system to other electronic gadgets and circuits.
The system is installed at the entrance of a house and is connected
to the phones of the house or a mobile phone. Phone numbers are
connected to the main system. When an intruder enters the house an
eclectic bulb lights up, a warning bell sounds, telephones or hand
phones start ringing. With the use of 3 G technology scenes of the break
in and any sound are recorded. Then owners of this house are able to
take suitable action. He has spent about Rs 5,000 on his invention.
Expenditure depends on the brand of 3G phone used.
”This is my first invention” said the winner of the Silver Medal, R P
D Madusanka. “It is a security system for a house.” For his invention he
has used an electronic circuit, some bulbs, a radio, 3G mobile phones an
land phones. All the windows and doors in the house are connected with
electronic gadgets to the main circuit.”
“When an intruder enters the house (fully secured or not) any time of
the day, automatically all the bulbs in the house light up, 3G hand
phones, radios, and land phones begin to ring giving signals to the
owner of the house. Until the owner comes to the house and switches off
the new equipment, they continue to operate. After that he can take
suitable action,” He has spent about Rs. 4,000 on his invention.
This is the first time the Bronze Medal winner R A M M S Rupasinghe
invented something. I am keen about new things. His invention, water
level detector. When we want to fill the water tank of a house the motor
must be switched on. When it overflows it must be switched off manually.
I wanted to build a system that would operate the motor automatically.
He has used a tube inside the water tank connected to the circuit.
With the new device, when the level of the water in the tanks reaches
the top, the motor automatically stops without over flowing. When the
tank gets empty the motor starts automatically fill the tank again. This
system is quite easy for the house wives.
The three medal winners of this competition received their medals
with certificates at a special prize-giving ceremony held recently at
Colombo University. |
