Prime Minister tells UNP:

Help to hold peaceful election

Prime Minister D M Jayaratne has appealed to the United National Party to extend their co-operation to hold the Local Government Elections on a peaceful manner as the Government was fully determined to ensure peace and harmony during the election days to ensure a peaceful election.

He said the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) would contest all the Local Government institutions in the forthcoming Local Government elections.

The Prime Minister made this observation at the Kandy District Secretariat where the nominations of the UPFA for the Kandy District were handed over.

Meanwhile, the Premier said there is no other Government except the Government of President Mahinda Rajapaksa which was dedicated to the welfare of the rural population. This fact is in the mind of the people who are grateful to the President and the Government, Prime Minister D M Jayaratne said. So, there is no doubt that the Government will achieve a landslide victory in the Local Government polls.

When asked by a mediaman as to whether the Government party would suffer due to the decision of the Muslim Congress to contest independently, the Premier said there would never be a problem with regard to the Muslim preferences.
