Real friend : Helping hand
The Pakistan Government has sent humanitarian assistance worth
over Rs 11.2 million for the people affected by the floods. The
emergency relief items include tents and blankets. These items
have been sent following an appeal made by the Pakistani mission
in Colombo on the request of the Sri Lankan Government. Pakistan

handed over the humanitarian aid to Minister Basil Rajapaksa at

External Affairs Minister Prof G L Peiris had a discussion with
European Union Member State Heads on January 17, at the External
Affairs Ministry. EU Ambassador in Colombo Bernard Savage,
German Ambassador Jens Plotner, French Ambassador Christine
Robichon, UK acting High Commissioner Mark Gooding, Italian
Embassy CDA, Gianluca Rubagotti and Dutch Embassy
representatives were present at the meeting. External Affairs
Deputy Minister Neomal Perera was also present at the discussion
along with External Affairs Ministry senior officials. |
Dharmaraja walk
The Dharmaraja Walk organized by the old boys of Dharmaraja Vidyalaya,
Kandy will be held today. This walk has been organized to raise funds
for the school's sports section.
The walk commences from the Dharmaraja College playgrounds, Principal
S M Keerthiratne said.
Book launch
Chandana Gunawardena's book Nonewathie Idiriyata - Molaya Saha Balaya
will be launched at a ceremony at the Colombo Public Library Auditorium
on February 5 at 8.30 am.
This will be followed by a workshop on Psychology. Admission is free.
Remembering Tagore
The Indian Cultural Centre is planning several programs to
commemorate the 150th anniversary of poet Rabindranath Tagore. The
programs will be organized in association with the University of
Colombo, University of Kelaniya, University of Sri Jayewardenepura,
Culture and Arts Ministry, Government of Sri Lanka and the Bangladesh
High Commission.
The celebration will commence with a series of talks and film
screening by Dr Reba Som. The first lecture will be delivered on January
31 at 1pm at the Library Auditorium, University of Colombo, Ried Avenue,
Colombo 7.
The talk is entitled Musical Journey of Rabindranath Tagore. This
will be followed by a screening of film The Story of Tagore's Gitanjali.
She will also deliver lectures at the Kelaniya University and Sri
Jayewardenepura University.
Spiritual program
A special program for Young People will be held on the topic "The
Reality of Life - What's happening around us" conducted by B K Gopi
Patel (A personality development trainer of the Brahma Kumaris World
Spiritual University) on January 30 at 5 00 pm at Harmony Hall, Brahma
Kumaris Raja Yoga Centre, 55, Peter's Lane, Dehiwala.
Pirith ceremony
A Pirith chanting ceremony will be held on January 27 and 28 to mark
the fifth anniversary of Nelumvessa Model Primary School at Kadawatha,
Ranmuthugala.
Thomian walk in Kotte
The first ever Thomian Parish Walk and New Year sale organized by St
Thomas' Church, Kotte will be held on January 30 from the Church
premises and will parade through the streets of Kotte leading up to the
Mirihana Police grounds, where a Mini-Carnival and New Year sale will be
held.
The walk will commence at 9.30am after the morning mass while the
carnival and sale will be held until 3pm.
Buddhist lecture
The Royal Asiatic Society, Sri Lanka (RASSL) will hold the sixth
lecture of the series on the theme 'Buddhist heritage of the Eastern
Province as depicted in Sanskrit Inscriptions' on January 31 at 5 pm at
the Gamini Dissanayake Auditorium, No 96, Ananda Coomarasway Mawatha,
Colombo 07. The lecture will be delivered by Kelaniya University
Sanskrit Department Head Ven Prof Induragare Dhammaratana Thera.
Detainee dies
Anuradhapura central special corr
One of the 25 detainees injured and hospitalized following the
violent incident at the Anuradhapura prison died at the Anuradhapura
Teaching Hospital yesterday.
Another detainee died earlier bringing the death toll to two. JMO Dr
D L Waidyaratne who held the post mortem examination decided to conduct
further investigations as he could not exactly determine the cause of
death.

All night pirith

To commemorate the 63rd Independence day, the Buddhasasana and
Religious Affairs Ministry and Buddhist Affairs Department has organized
an all night Pirith chanting ceremony and other religious programs under
the patronage of Sri Lanka Amarapura Maha Nikaya's Most Ven Agga Maha
Panditha Dawuldena Gnanissara Thera at Independence Square, Colombo 7,
on February 02.
These programs are to be held under the directives of President
Mahinda Rajapaksa with the guidance of Prime Minister and Buddhasasana
and Religious Affairs Minister D M Jayaratna. The religious programs on
Independence day will be held at the premises of the Kataragama
Kirivehera temple under the patronage of Chief Incumbent Kirivehera
Rajamaha Vihara Ven Dr Aluthwewa Soratha Thera.
Book launch
A Book titled 'Arthika Yuddhaya Jayaganima' (winning the Economic
war) composed by 'Divaina' Newspaper Journalist Shyam Nuwan Ganewatta,
will be launched at the National Library Auditorium, Independence
Avenue, Colombo 7 today (January 28) at 3.30 pm at a function held under
the auspices of Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa.
Medical clinic
A medical clinic organized by Suhada Sevana Samitiya, Panadura will
be held on January 29 at 8.30pm at the Jeremias Dias School.
A separate clinic to vaccinate and sterilize stray dogs will also be
held. Tests for blood sugar and cholesterol will also be conducted. A
team of specialist doctors will conduct the clinics.
M T M Kaleel dies
Pioneer of the Maharagama Azhariyyah Masjid well known social
activist Alhaj M T M Kaleel died yesterday. He was 80 years. He leaves
his wife and 10 children. He was the cousin of Parliamentarian A H M
Azwer and Dr Harris Deen (UK).
Burial took place last evening at Dehiwela Muslim burial grounds. |
