Nearly 250,000 archaeological sites

Countries worldwide have faced many challenges when conserving their national heritages. However, they were able to achieve their goals. Therefore, Sri Lanka too would be able to emulate such countries, National Heritage Minister Jagath Balasuriya said.

Participating in the inaugural ceremony of the Dematamal Temple in Adampane, Nochchiyagama Minister Balasuriya said that the Archaeological Department had identified around 250,000 archaeological sites throughout the country.

However, to renovate these sites systematically, the Department lacks the facilities, as the Department has only 0.2 of the estimated cost to finish this task

According to the concept of President Mahinda Rajapaksa the Government has implemented a program for the renovation and development of archaeological sites throughout the country, he said. The construction program of the Dematamal Thupa has been launched under the guidance of the Archaeological Department.
