Maga Engineering obtains ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001
Maga Engineering has grown to become the leading construction company
in Sri Lanka. The company has completed over 250 multidisciplinary
projects in both Sri Lanka and abroad, ranging from buildings, roads and
bridges, to water supply and marine work.
M G Kularatne founded Maga Engineering in 1984 with the vision to
become a model construction firm in the region. During its formative
years, the company gained valuable technical and managerial exposure by
working under some of the worlds leading construction firms such as
Kajima, Mitsui, Taisei and Kumagai Gumi of Japan. In 1988, Maga ventured
into its first overseas project in Maldives.
In 1992, the company managed to attain the National Construction
Grade 1 for building construction, and received its first national
construction award from ICTAD for Army Commander’s Secretariat in
Colombo.
As the decade progressed, Maga had won its first National Excellence
Award for the construction of Hemas Head Office in Colombo and completed
a string of renowned hotels such as Eden, Taj Exotica, Blue Waters,
Sinbad Gardens and Light House hotel along the west coast.
Maga’s unwavering commitment to quality has manifested through a
record 47 national quality awards won within a span of 18 years. In
2008, The Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka honoured the company with
the institution’s first ever Engineering Excellence Award for
infrastructure development. Maga also achieved the coveted Business
Superbrands status in the same year and successfully completed its first
Green Building, a LEED Platinum certified green manufacturing plant at
Thulhiriya for MAS Holdings. Maga has taken forward its pioneering focus
on sustainable buildings through another project, the Nelung Arts Centre
in Colombo.
In 2009, Maga received the Gold rating in Sri Lanka’s first ever
Corporate Accountability Index formulated by Sting Consultants. In 2010,
it received the Platinum rating and the number three ranking in the
country. Currently the company maintains a B level of disclosure in
sustainability reporting under the guidelines of the Global Reporting
Initiative. For the past four consecutive years, Maga has been recognize
as one of the Most Respected Business Entities by LMD and as the leader
of the Construction and Engineering sectors by the National Chamber of
Commerce.
In January 2010, the company decided to seek ISO 14001 and OHSAS
18001 certification for its HSE systems. After the compliance audit in
March 2010, the Management System was implemented at projects and
activity centre from April 2010. In September 2010 the system was
subjected to external auditing. On November 19, 2010, Maga’s HSE system
was certified to be in compliance with ISO 14001:2004 and OHSAS
18001:2007 international standards. |
