Maga Engineering obtains ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001

Maga Engineering has grown to become the leading construction company in Sri Lanka. The company has completed over 250 multidisciplinary projects in both Sri Lanka and abroad, ranging from buildings, roads and bridges, to water supply and marine work.

M G Kularatne founded Maga Engineering in 1984 with the vision to become a model construction firm in the region. During its formative years, the company gained valuable technical and managerial exposure by working under some of the worlds leading construction firms such as Kajima, Mitsui, Taisei and Kumagai Gumi of Japan. In 1988, Maga ventured into its first overseas project in Maldives.

In 1992, the company managed to attain the National Construction Grade 1 for building construction, and received its first national construction award from ICTAD for Army Commander’s Secretariat in Colombo.

As the decade progressed, Maga had won its first National Excellence Award for the construction of Hemas Head Office in Colombo and completed a string of renowned hotels such as Eden, Taj Exotica, Blue Waters, Sinbad Gardens and Light House hotel along the west coast.

Maga’s unwavering commitment to quality has manifested through a record 47 national quality awards won within a span of 18 years. In 2008, The Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka honoured the company with the institution’s first ever Engineering Excellence Award for infrastructure development. Maga also achieved the coveted Business Superbrands status in the same year and successfully completed its first Green Building, a LEED Platinum certified green manufacturing plant at Thulhiriya for MAS Holdings. Maga has taken forward its pioneering focus on sustainable buildings through another project, the Nelung Arts Centre in Colombo.

In 2009, Maga received the Gold rating in Sri Lanka’s first ever Corporate Accountability Index formulated by Sting Consultants. In 2010, it received the Platinum rating and the number three ranking in the country. Currently the company maintains a B level of disclosure in sustainability reporting under the guidelines of the Global Reporting Initiative. For the past four consecutive years, Maga has been recognize as one of the Most Respected Business Entities by LMD and as the leader of the Construction and Engineering sectors by the National Chamber of Commerce.

In January 2010, the company decided to seek ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 certification for its HSE systems. After the compliance audit in March 2010, the Management System was implemented at projects and activity centre from April 2010. In September 2010 the system was subjected to external auditing. On November 19, 2010, Maga’s HSE system was certified to be in compliance with ISO 14001:2004 and OHSAS 18001:2007 international standards.
