Pongal harvest festival
The way for new opportunities or bringing new hopes to our lives: the
essence of Thai Pongal, and what better way to spend it at MLH when they
celebrated Thai Pongal with all its glory.
GM Anura Dewapura says they celebrate iconic traditions in all its
glory all the time. The same way they celebrate Ifthar, Christmas, St
Lucias Day and Deepavali they believe Thai Pongal should be celebrated
too.
Thai Pongal is traditionally dedicated to the Sun God. The harvest
festival of Pongal symbolizes the veneration of the first fruit. The
crop is harvested only after a certain time of the year, and cutting the
crop before that time is strictly prohibited.
Pongal was originally a festival for the farming community; today it
is celebrated by all. Families gather to rejoice and share their joy and
their harvests with others. The Sun is offered a "Pongal" of rice and
milk. And indeed The Kolam is much more than just an aesthetic art and
indeed MLH had it all.
