Sailors go away with Clifford Cup

Sri Lanka Navy walked away with the Clifford Cup by claiming four gold medals at the 83rd Boxing Championships which concluded on a grand scale at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium yesterday. S L Heelbathdeniya (Slimline BC) was awarded the H K Karunaratne Memorial Trophy for the Best Boxer, when he defeated R G S Kumarasinghe (SL Navy) in the Light Welter Weight under 64 kgs category final.

The Best Boxer’s award in the Women’s category was awarded to A A K Nilmini (MAS Southern BC). She beat D A Jayasinghe (Thuruliya BC) on points 11/1 in the Light Fly Weight under 48 kgs bout. SL Army secured the runner-up position in the team championship with three gold medals and three silver medals.

The chief guest at the award ceremony was former National, Clifford Cup and Heavy Weight Boxer Rtd. DIG of Police Munidasa Gomes and gave away the awards.

Fly Weight (under 51 kgs): MNV Prabandhi (Thuruliya BC ) beat San Weeraratne (MAS SouthernBC) RSC in round two.

Bantam Weight (under 52 kgs): BLS Sandarekha (Mas Southern BC) beat WAS Santhika (SL Police) RSC in round two.

Feather Weight (under 57 kgs): LKM Priyadharshani (MAS southern BC) beat MPK Salgadoe (SL Army) RSC in round three.

Light Weight (under 60 kgs): TLBI Abewardene (Thuruliya BC) beat SDNS Karunaratne(SL Army) RSC in round two.

Light Welter Weight (under 64 kgs): JVPCK Jayasekera (MAS Southern) beat BI Padmini (SL Police) RSC in round two.

Welter Weight (under 69 kgs): UGWJ Ratwatte (SL Army) beat KA Sarika (Sl Navy) RSC in round two.

Midle Weight under75 kgs): VPDS Dhakshika (SL Police) beat DDS Weeraratne (SL Police) RSC in round two.

Super Heavy Weight over 81 kgs): IM Weerasinghe (SL Army) uncontested.

Men

Light Fly Weight 49 kgs): HMSP Gamage (SL Navy) beat WACI Perera (SL Army).

Fly Weight (under 52 kgs): MVGCS Bandara (SL Army) beat ASV Wickramage (Linea BC).

Bantam Weight (under 56 kgs): TDNT Jayakody (SL Air Force) beat WRT Weerakkody (SL Army).

Light Weight (under 60 kgs): DSK Fernando (SL Navy) beat DLS Jayasinghe (SL Police).

Welter Weight (under 69 kgs): APG Chandra Kumara (SL Army) beat KK Jayasundera (SL Navy).
