Sailors go away with Clifford Cup

Sri Lanka Navy walked away with the Clifford Cup by claiming four
gold medals at the 83rd Boxing Championships which concluded on a grand
scale at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium yesterday. S L Heelbathdeniya (Slimline
BC) was awarded the H K Karunaratne Memorial Trophy for the Best Boxer,
when he defeated R G S Kumarasinghe (SL Navy) in the Light Welter Weight
under 64 kgs category final.

The Best Boxer’s award in the Women’s category was awarded to A A K
Nilmini (MAS Southern BC). She beat D A Jayasinghe (Thuruliya BC) on
points 11/1 in the Light Fly Weight under 48 kgs bout. SL Army secured
the runner-up position in the team championship with three gold medals
and three silver medals.
The chief guest at the award ceremony was former National, Clifford
Cup and Heavy Weight Boxer Rtd. DIG of Police Munidasa Gomes and gave
away the awards.
