Gaping hole on bridge claims motorcyclist

A motorcyclist was drowned when he fell into the Dummalamodara Ela with his cycle through a gaping hole on the bridge across the ela while crossing it Wednesday night.

The deceased was identified as P Chandralal Abeygunawardena, a father of three of Wadugoda, Viharakanda, Payagala, a former driver attached to the Sri Lanka Ports Authority.

The Payagala Police assisted by the residents in the area recovered his body and despatched it to the Nagoda Hospital for an autopsy. Investigations are continuing directed by Payagala Police OIC Inspector Chaminda Kulasinghe. Residents say that they had notified the authorities about this death trap on the bridge on several occasions and no action had been taken so far to repair the bridge.
