Quarter-finals completed in Clifford Cup boxing

Quarter Finals of the 83rd Amateur Clifford Cup Boxing Championships were completed at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium yesterday.

Altogether 37 bouts were worked off for the day in different weight categories. In the Light Fly Weight under 48 kgs womens' bouts W S B N Nishadi of Silueta Boxing Club won over R A N Puspakumari of Vidyarathna Sports Club and D A Jayasinghe of Thurulie Boxing Club punched out W D D C N Amarasinghe of Lihiniya Boxing Club to become the semi finalists.

The Mens' Light Fly Weight, under 49 Kgs bout between H M S P Gamage of Sri Lanka Navy and M A Nuwan of Lihiniya BC turned in to a tough game and went on equal points at all rounds.

The judges' decision came out 3/2 in favour of Gamage.

A similar fight was witnessed in a Men's Fly Weight, under 52 kgs bout between MVGCS Bandara of Sri Lanka Army and R I Warnasuriya of Vidyaratne College BC, Kandy which the judges ruled in favour of Bandara.

In another bout in the same category between H M D V R Herath of Vidyartne College BC, Kandy and W A K Lashantha of Sri Lanka Air Force had to stop during the 1st round and gave away the victory to Herath after judge decided the Air man was not fit to compete.

The Mens' quarter final bouts of Fly Weight, under 52 kgs / Light Weight, under 52 kgs / Welter Weight, under 69 kgs / Heavy Weight, under 91 kgs / Bantam Weight, under 56 kgs / Light Welter Weight, under 64 kgs and Middle Weight, under 75 kgs were to be worked out at the time of the press.

The weigh-in and medical test for semi finalists will be held from 8 am to 9 am today and the bouts will be worked out in the evening at the same venue.

Light Fly Weight, Under 49 kgs - W A C I Perera of SL Army win over B M R Kumara of SL Air Force (2/0 points). T D N Samaranayake of Slimline BC knocked out W A D C S Weerasinghe of SL Navy (6/0 points).

Super Heavy Weight (over 91 kgs): D R P Dissanayake of Slimline BC punched out K A P G Chaminda of SL Navy.

Light Heavy Weight (under 81 kgs): H L Wanigasuriya of Slimline BC win over A H S S Atukorala of SL Army ( 6/3 points). W S E Eranga of SL Navy overcome K V L Prasanna of SL Police.
