Navy assists Indian fishermen in distress
Naval personnel at the Northern Naval Command with the local
fishermen rendered prompt assistance and rescued the boat with the
Indian crew in the seas west of Madagal and brought it ashore for
further assistance. Technical assistance was provided to repair the
fishing boat and the crew was provided with food and accommodation. The
rescued fishermen will be swiftly repatriated.
On many occasions, the Sri Lanka Navy has come to the rescue of
Indian fishermen in distress on humanitarian grounds and provided them
with assistance using its vessels and personnel despite the heavy
expenses incurred by the Navy in the process.
On November 2, 2010 the Sri Lanka Navy Ship Ranawickrema rendered
assistance to 11 Indian fishermen in distress and SLN personnel assisted
in repairing their damaged fishing trawlers after having them towed to
anchorage off Delft Island.
Grateful Indian fishermen have expressed their thanks for the
provision of swift rescue assistance and the hospitality extended by the
Sri Lanka Navy in providing them with food and accommodation as well as
technical and salvaging assistance while in distress.
The Sri Lankan and Indian Navies share cooperation in providing
assistance to fishermen in distress in their respective waters on
humanitarian grounds and collaborate in the prevention of illegal
activities across the maritime boarders to ensure safety and security in
the Indian Ocean.
