Four coastal conservation projects planned
Four coastal protection projects proposed by the Coast Conservation
Department (CCD) will be implemented shortly to improve the status of
the coastal environment and the living standards of the coastal
communities and resource users.
It has been proposed to protect the coastal line from Pahala
Katuneriya to Chilaw through special project costing Rs 2,750 million.
The coastal line in four Divisional Secretariats including Nattandiya,
Arachchikattuwa, Mahawewa and Chilaw will be conserved in a sustainable
manner. Providing additional safeguard existing livelihoods, enhancing
fishing activities, developing tourism, improving ground water quality
and local recreational activities are the other major objectives of the
project.
The project will be completed within four years.
Meanwhile, the Negambo lagoon is expected to be rehabilitated to
increase its water circulation level. It is also aimed to increase the
productivity of the lagoon and provide an alternative livelihood to the
fishing and coastal community. Selected channels in the Negombo lagoon
will be rehabilitated at a cost of Rs 480 million.
The shore front from the Light House hotel to Butterfly Bridge in the
Galle west area will be protected while enhancing coastal resources. The
project will also improve the livelihood of the communities while
developing the coastal landscape and seascape.
The estimated cost of the project is US$ 5.2 million which will be
completed in three years.
In addition, projects will be carried out to support sustainable
livelihood and reduce vulnerability to climate changes in the
Trincomalee, Batticaloa and Ampara districts at an estimated cost of US
$ 14 million.
