Treasure hunting costs dear

Six persons who pleaded guilty to hunting treasure at an archaeological site were fined Rs 2.4 million by Anuradhapura Chief Magistrate and Additional Divisional Judge Darshika Wimalasiri.

The Anuradhapura 'Anti Vice Squad' took the suspects into custody on October 8 while they were hunting treasures at an archaeological site at Nelumkanniya, Anuradhapura.

The six suspects were charged for excavating treasure at an archaeological site and damaging sacred ruins.

Each accused was fined 200,000 rupees for each charge.

A 12 month rigorous imprisonment was imposed in default of fines.
