Many lives saved

The Sri Lanka Life Saving Association has saved the lives of 104 persons who had fallen into difficulties while sea bathing this year. Association’s Chief Inspector and Advisor P K Edirisinghe said the majority were schoolchildren who had ventured into dangerous spots in Mt Lavinia, Moratuwa, Wellawatta, Galle Face and Negombo.

Among those saved were a small number who had made suicide bids. He said the lack of a data base regarding cases of drowning and other incidents in rivers, waterfalls and other water courses in and around the country was a severe impediment towards compiling a report to educate people regarding bathing and related hazards.
