Incessant torrential rains :

Over 32,811 families affected

Around 130,072 people in almost all districts have been affected by the incessant torrential rains, according to Disaster Management Centre statistics.

The bad weather has hampered civilian life in the country during the last few weeks.

At least six people were killed and 10 injured in floods caused by the rains that lashed across the country, Disaster Management Centre sources said.

Most deaths were reported due to drowning while walking across flooded areas. One person in Medirigiriya was killed by lightning. A person in Bulathsinhala was reported missing. More than 362 houses throughout the country were totally damaged while 4,703 houses have been partially damaged after trees falling on houses due to earthslips.

The Met Department has advised the public to take precautionary measures regarding the sudden rise of water levels when bathing in rivers since sluice gates in most reservoirs have been opened.

Meanwhile, Met Department sources said that this rainy weather situation will continue today too in most parts of the country.

Heavy rain accompanied by thunder showers will be experienced today.
