Field health inspectors appointed

A new batch of 56 Field Health Inspectors were appointed by the
Health Ministry to serve in Batticaloa, Trincomalee and Ampara
Districts. At a function held under the patronage of Batticaloa
Provincial Health Director Dr M Devarajan recently Eastern Province
Chief Minister Shivaneshathurai Chandrakandan presented the appointment
letters to the new recruits.

Rs 866 lakhs provided for reconstructions

Reconstruction in Matara
Reconstruction of 79 roads in the Matara Electorate was begun
recently. Estimated expenditure for this project is Rs 866 lakhs. This
project is an outcome of a proposal made by Sanath Jayasuriya MP Matara
District.
Under Gama Neguma program Rs 396 lakhs are provided for
reconstructing 66 roads in 66 Grama Seva Divisions of Matara Electorate.
Under Maga Neguma program Rs 470 lakhs are provided for 13 roads in
Matara Municipal Limits localities, served by these roads are thousands
of low income families who will benefit once the project is completed.
Fishing nets in custody

Batticaloa Fisheries Department Officers with the assistance of
Batticaloa police have taken prohibited fishing nets worth Rs 3.5
million into custody on Wednesday evening. Fisheries Assistant Director
Dominic Perera said that these nets were taken into custody in
Kantankudy and the suburb. Nets were to be produced in Courts yesterday.
Five years RI for accused

Panadura Provincial High Court Judge Malanee Gunaratne sentenced an
accused in a murder case to five years rigorous imprisonment and imposed
a fine of Rs 10,000 in default of six months imprisonment.
In this case the accused Jayakodige Don Leelaratne of Ingiriya
pleaded guilty to a charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder
of Premachandra Jayasinghe of Ingiriya on December 15th 1997 by
assaulting him with a club.
Sumedha Perera, Attorney-at-Law defended the accused and made
submission.
State Counsel Wasantha Perera prosecuted.
Police reduce traffic accidents

Through the traffic offences detected by the Anuradhapura police
Traffic Branch during the year up to now around Rs 5 lakhs has been
earned to the Government funds as penalties imposed by the court.
Anuradhapura Police Traffic Branch OIC Sub Inspector Nissanka said that
the police had reduced the number of fatal accidents to 15 this year
which had been 24 during 2009.
He further said a planned program is conducted in the area to further
reduce traffic offences made by the drivers.
Remote school in Sabaragamuwa innovative and tech-savvy
Teachers and students of Panawaka Maha Vidyalaya in Kegalle of the
Sabaragamuwa Province bagged 16 awards at the Innovative Teachers’ and
students’ competition, for the year 2010, held recently.
”We have done it again. Last year too, we won many awards at this
competition,” the jubilant teachers and students’ told the Daily News
Teacher Sunilarathna in-charge of the school’s computer centre won
the all-island first place and a scholarship in A/L category while Ms
Athauda won the all-island first place as the most creative teacher.
As further encouragement, the school has been included in the
e-village scheme which was launched in August 2010. The school has even
created a website to connect with the world. The success of this little
known Maha Vidyalaya from Kegalle is taking shape into national
standards with the immense sacrifice and dedication of the present
principal P G Thellijjagoda and his teaching staff.
Father, son die in trap mishap

A father and son in Tenna, Matale died of electrocution after
trampling an illegal electrified trap laid for wild boar on Wednesday
night. The deceased were identified as G G Kapilaratne, 43, and his son
Udara Tillakaratne, 22.
Institute opening
The Institute of International Studies, Kalawewa will be opened by
Peradeniya University, Mathematics Department Head Dr H M Nasir on
December 4 at 4.00 pm.
He will deliver the keynote address on ‘International Economy’.
Special workshops and seminars will be conducted for school students,
school leavers and elders relating to language religion, sociology,
culture, technology and health, Institute Director Dr Abdul Wajid added.
Nicholite Christmas Carols
St. Nicholas’ International Colleges, Colombo and Negombo will
jointly host a carol service entitled “Christmas with St Nicholas!”, on
December 7, at 5.30 pm at Negombo College, Katana, Nelumpitiya. Colombo
Archbishop Emeritus and St. Nicholas’ International College Chairman and
Patron His Grace Most Rev Dr Oswald Gomis will grace the occasion. First
Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa, will be the Chief Guest at the joint Christmas
carol service. Traditional Christmas carols including a rendition of
Schubert’s Ave Maria, The Christmas Lullaby, Carol of the Bells,
Mistletoe and wine, and many more as well as a sing-along of carols
together with the students, staff, parents and invitees. The Brass band
and oriental dance troupe of the Negombo College will also participate.
World AIDS Day seminar
The Sri Lanka Federation of NGOs Against Drug Abuse, Sri Lanka
Fongoada and The Lions Clubs International - District 306 A2 have
organised a seminar to commemorate World AIDS Day on December 4 at Miami
Exports Pvt Limited auditorium, Wellawatta.
Dr Suidhrama Gunasekera will deliver the keynote address. Fongoada
President Lion S Ramachandran, organisers of the event, said over 300
participants in the age group of 20 to 40 will participate in the
seminar. Lions Club Dehiwela North President Lion Thusitha Piyasena is
assisting the organisers. The organisers have included a poster campaign
and a singing contest among the participants. Cash prizes will be
distributed among winners.
Y’s Men’s Club celebrates 80
The Colombo Club will celebrate its 80th Charter anniversary today.
CY’sdom was introduced to Sri Lanka (then Ceylon) in 1929 and the first
club (Colombo) was chartered on December 3, 1930 with the late Sir
Oliver Goonetilleka, former Governor General as its Charter President.
Talents of Rotary
Talents of Rotary 2010, the annual concert of Rotary International
School, Nugegoda will be held on December 7 from 5 pm to 9 pm at the
National Youth Council Auditorium, Maharagama. Sangeeth Nipun Sanath
Nandasiri will be the Chief Guest. Malkanthi Nandasiri will also
participate. This is the school’s seventh concert.

Electronic numbers for letters
Parliament Corrs.
The Postal Department will issue an electronic number to every letter
being exchanged under the Department in the near future, Postal Services
Minister Jeevan Kumaratunga said in Parliament yesterday.
He was participating at the committee stage of the budget debate
where the heads under the Finance Ministry was taken up. He said this
system has been implemented in many countries and it is referred to as
track and trail system. Minister Kumaratunga noted that this new system
will help prevent delays in deliveries, misplacement and fraud.
MP passes away:
Speaker expresses grief
Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa officially announced in Parliament the
passing away of Vanni District MP Noordeen Mashoor yesterday morning. He
expressed the grief of the House over the sudden death and said that a
condolence motion would be taken up before Parliament another date.
