Two million women, children trafficked to global sex trade
Two million women and children have been trafficked into the global
sex trade. One third of it is in South Asia, Child Development and
Women's Affairs Minister Tissa Karaliyadda quoting statistics said.

"We should take action to prevent human trafficking," Karaliyadda
said addressing a workshop on women and child trafficking held at the
Sri Lanka Foundation Institute yesterday.
He said that human trafficking is a worldwide problem.
"Not only men even some women are also at the fault for this
situation. Abuse of women and children and harassment should be
stopped," the Minister said. He said a program will be organized at
grassroot level to make people aware about abuse.
National Committee on Women Chairperson Dr Neela Gunasekara, Child
Development and Women's Affairs Ministry Secretary. Namani Gunasekara,
Justice Shirani Thilakawardena, Deputy Solicitor General Palitha
Fernando, and Dr. Hiranthi Wijemanne were also present. |
