Pilisaru aims to make Lanka garbage free

Pilisaru, the national solid waste management program was launched to make Sri Lanka garbage free, Environment Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa said.


Environment Minister Anura Priyadharshana Yapa drives a tractor, which was handed over to Pradeshiya Sabhas.

Addressing a meeting at the Central Environmental Authority yesterday, the Minister said all Pradeshiya Sabhas have been made aware of material waste management. "We have been vested with the responsibility of material waste management. Arrangements are being taken to activate a system to collect garbage according to their re usability," the Minister said.

The Environment Ministry will provide financial and technical assistance to Pradeshiya Sabhas to help garbage management. Compost bins, waste collection bins,vehicle and machinery were distributed under the Pilisaru project. The Central Environment Authority handed over 16 tractors, 18 trailers and one hand tractor worth Rs 19 million to Pradeshiya Sabhas to transport garbage.

Environment Deputy Minister Abdul Cader and Central Environment Authority Chairman Charitha Herath also addressed the meeting.
