MAS Holdings take Mercantile Title

MAS Holdings for the first time beat 10 times winners and last year runners up John Keells ‘A’ by 29 points (2 goals 3 tries) to 24 (2 goals 2 tries) in a nail biting final witnessed by a packed house at the CR & FC Grounds on November 14. The highest aggregate in the tournament was scored by the debutant V V Karunaratne & Co who played a brilliant game to score a massive 171 points in seven matches and also carried away the Shield award.

Bilal Hassen of John Keells Holdings ‘A’ who played his heart out in the final was adjudged the Player of the Final. This tournament was organized by the Mercantile Rugby Football Association (MRFA) for the 40th year and sponsored by the Dialog Axiata PLC. More than 400 participants from 40 teams took part in this grand finale.

The chief guest was Suresh Sidu (Chief Officer, Enterprise and Global Business-Dialog).

Results: Plate- won by Access Group who beat Dialog ‘A’ 31 points to 5. Bowl- was won by Commercial Credit who beat HSBC ‘A’ 33 points to 7 while the Shield was won by V V Karunaratne & Co who beat HDPL ‘B’ 38 points to 5.
