Crowned outlets provide safer foods in Colombo

Representatives from a large number of hotels in Colombo participated in the training program that was conducted by Ind-Expo Certification (Pvt) Ltd in collaboration with the Colombo Municipal Council for food catering establishments in the Colombo city. This was revealed by the Ind-Expo Certification Chairman, A K Ratnarajah. He

also mentioned that this confirms that there is now a greater interest among the hotels in Colombo to operate hygienically with emphasis on hygienically prepared food being offered to their customers which is a very encouraging sign.

Ind-Expo Certification Company has launched a project to encourage the upgrading of food storage, food preparation and food supplying in organizations such as hotels, restaurants, bakeries and super markets that are engaged in supplying food to the public.

This project, aimed at improving the cleanliness, the hygiene and the taste of the food the public buy, is named the "Crowns for Food Hygiene" project. Ind-Expo Certification Company held the "Crowns for Food Hygiene" promotional training program at the Colombo Municipal Council Millennium Centre under this project. Ind-Expo Certification Company is holding such programs under this project continuously.

Any food supply organization such as hotels, restaurants, bakeries, super markets, eating houses, tea boutiques and mobile food supply services that has obtained the permission from their respective Padesheeya Sabhas can participate in this "Crowns for Food Hygiene" project. By participating in this project, the relevant organizations will get the advantages such as being able to supply clean, hygienically prepared, tasty food to their customers and attract more customers to their establishments, being able to escape from being taken legal action against for supplying unclean food, and risking the closure of their establishments, getting used to good administration in all sections, increased profits and getting a good reputation and social acceptance of the standard of their establishments.

When an organization joins the "Crowns for Food Hygiene" program, Ind-Expo Certification Company launches a methodical investigation of the food storage, preparation and supply adhering to internationally accepted standards.

Then, that organization will be certified Excellent (five Crowns), Very Good (four Crowns), Good (three Crowns), Fair (two Crowns) and Poor (one Crown). After the grading, Ind-Expo Certification Company will issue a certificate and a sticker with Crown symbols, valid for one year only. The sticker can be displayed to the customers and the details of the organization will be posted on the website www.crowns.lk by this method, the customers get confident of the establishment they are obtaining their food from and it is very advantageous to the establishment in the angle of business.

Ind-Expo Certification Company is established with the collaboration of The Ceylon National Chamber of Industries (CNCI) and the National Chamber of Exporters of Sri Lanka in 2007. The technical assistance for the "Crowns for Food Hygiene" project is from the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). The Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) is giving their fullest co-operation in making the "Crowns for Food Hygiene" a success.
