Peterites clinch Under-17 Division One title

St Peter’s College produced a fine all-round performance to clinch
the inter-school Under-17 Division One title while overcoming Trinity,
College Kandy by a convincing margin of seven wickets in the final
encounter worked off at the CCC grounds in Maitland Crescent yesterday.
The Peterites successfully chased their opponent’s total of 170 runs
and reached their target at the end with 15 overs to spare. Dashing
opener Shehan Fernando spearheaded their run chase with a sparkling half
century as St Peter’s College reached 175 for 3 from 35 overs.
Skipper Shehan Fernando made his intentions clear from the start as
he launched a fierce attack on the Trinity bowlers while completing his
half century from just 48 deliveries inclusive of two sixes and half a
dozen boundaries.
Together with his opening partner Sashen Fernando the pair put on 84
runs from 14.3 overs that led the way for a convincing victory at the
end. Sashen Fernando of course made 30 from 54 deliveries and with the
help of one six and four boundaries.
However Shehan Fernando continued with the good work almost until the
end before Jason Buultjens and Lahiru Nilantha added the finishing
touches with an unfinished fourth wicket partnership of 32 runs.
Earlier, Trinity College batting first after winning the toss failed
to make good use of the conditions and folded up for a modest 170 runs
from 48 overs. They of course got off to a decent start through the
efforts of Dickwella (41) and Jayatunga (34).
However, Trinity lost wickets at regular intervals and could not
build up a good partnership that would have put them in a strong
position. Makuldeniya (27) and Premasinghe (27) batted determinedly
during the latter stages but St Peter’s did well to pick up wickets at
regular intervals mainly through the efforts of Udhaka Galhena.
Trinity: 170 in 48 overs (D P N Dickwella 41, C H Jayatunga 34, K
Makuludeniya 28, D Premasinghe 27, Udhaka Galhena 3 for 25).
St Peter’s: 175 for 3 in 35 overs (Shehan Fernando 51, Sashen
Fernando 30, D Hemantha 18, J Buultjens 27 n.o, L. Nilantha 24 n.o).
