People back reforms

The people took to the streets in large numbers to show their support to the 18th constitutional amendments. Here are a few occasions in Puttalam, Anuradhapura, Kahatagasdigiliya and the people from Kelaniya, Wattala and Gampaha areas at Horton Place, Colombo.


Bakeer Markar commemoration speeches

Commemorative speeches to mark the 13th death anniversary of former Speaker M A Bakeer Markar which falls tomorrow will be aired over the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation.

Speeches will be conducted by Heras Fernando from 10am to 10.15am over the Sinhala Swadeshiya Service, Phoneix O & M Chairman and Managing Director Irvin Weerakkody from 6.30pm to 6.45p.m. on the English Service.

Attorney-at-Law N M Shaheed at 9.45 pm on the Tamil Service and N M Ameen at 7.05 pm on the Muslim Service.


Public suggestions for prison reforms

The Consultative Committee on Prison Reforms appointed by the Rehabilitation and Prison Reforms Minister has called for public views and suggestions to be considered for inclusion in its final report.

Those interested should send their views and suggestions to Chairman, Consultative Committee on Prison Reforms, Ministry of Rehabilitation and Prison Reforms, No. 35, Dr N M Perera Mawatha, Colombo 8. before September 30.


Public lecture

A Public lecture by Prof. Mohan Munasinghe on Climate Change and sustainability will be held on September 9 at 5.00 p.m. at the SLAAS Auditorium, Wijerama Mawatha, Colombo 7.

Prof. Munasinghe shared the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize as Vice Chair, UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).


Musical evening

The pupils and friends of Hasinee Halpe Andree will take the stage at the Russian Cultural Centre, on September 10 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. with items ranging through pop, rock and classical music. Justin Bieber’s “Never Say Never”, “Hero” by “Nickelback”, to improvised blues to Bizet’s Pearl Fishers Elijah Rock and more will be featured.


Engineering exhibition

EXMO-2010 Engineering and Technical Exhibition organized by the Engineering Faculty of Moratuwa University will be held from September 9 to 11 from 9 a.m to 7 p.m at the University premises. The Extreme Odyssey EXMO-2010 will carry out programs for university and school students and the public.


Anniversary celebrations

The Harekrishna Bakthi Association will organize its Sunday School 10th Anniversary Celebration and Prize Giving Ceremony will be held at the Pradeepa Hall, Maligawatte, Colombo 10 on September 12 at 4 p.m. ITN Board of Director Hashim Omar will be the guest of Honour.


Moon Sighting Conference

A conference will be held today immediately after Salath UL Maghrib, under the auspices of the Colombo Grand Mosque at the Madrasathul Hameediah Hall, Colombo Grand Mosque, to determine the date to commence the Islamic month of Shawwal Hijri 1431 on the evidence of sighting the new moon in any part of Sri Lanka.

The Colombo Grand Mosque also appealed to Muslims to look out for the new moon of Shawwal Hijri 1431 immediately after Maghrib today and Inform 011-52340442, 432110, 2390783 or 0777 366099 with evidence and witnesses, If the new moon in sighted.


Help this child

J.M.L.H. Lithmi Hirudini Jayawardena, 3, of Kotuwegeara Kotikapala, Mawathagama is suffering from profound sensorineural hearing loss in both ears.

Consultant ENT surgeon recommended an urgent cochlear implant surgery to restore her hearing.

The surgery and the post surgery rehabilitation program is estimated to cost Rs. 2,050,000. The baby’s father D.M.C.M. Dissanayake says he is unable to foot this bill due to his financial plight.

He request philanthropist and the public to assist his child’s cause by sending contribution to help expedite the surgery.

Computer Application program

Mathematics and Computer Science Department of the Open University has initiated a certificate program in professional computer applications for employees and students.Persons with a pass in English at the CGE Ordinary Level Examination or with an equivalent qualification are eligible to follow the course. The course will commence on September 19.
