Red Cross Athletic Meet in A’pura

The 6th Red Cross National Youth Athletic Championship amongst Red Cross Societies islandwide will take place on September 10, 11 and 12 at the Anuradhapura Esplanade. Around thousand athletes (men and women) from 26 Societies will be in action in 80 events. The meet will be conducted in eight age groups from Under 16, 18, 20, 23 and 28.

The meet will be declared open by the Governor of the North Central Province Karunaratne Divulgane at 1.30pm on the first day.

The meet is gradually becoming popular judging by the increased number of participants this year.

Col. Sudath Madugalle the DDG of the Society who chaired a press briefing with regard to the event at the Grand Oriental Hotel, Kashyapa Room said that the meet will enhance the talented youth in the rural areas to display their true abilities and identify the talents.

It should also help to build brotherhood among the participants.

At the inception it was to be an International meet with the Red Cross Societies of other countries too, taking part.

But at that time the environment did not permit to proceed with the plan, and now with the dawn of peace the organisers are optimistic of a meet of that nature in the near future.
