Attack condemned

The Sri Lanka Police Inspectors’ Union and the Sri Lanka Junior Police Officers’ Association yesterday condemned the alleged attack on two police officers on duty at the Galle Police Station by a group of persons identified as people’s representatives who arrived at the station Thursday.

The Police Inspectors Association in a statement issued yesterday says that this attack inside the Police Station can be construed as an attempt by the alleged assailants to take the law into their hands. The Association with a membership of nearly 8,000 Police Inspectors while condemning this alleged blatant assault which is both unpleasant and illegal call upon the authorities concerned to launch an immediate investigation into it and punish those responsible.

The Junior Police Officers’ Association said the officers targeted by this alleged attack were Reserve Sergeants Sranasinghe and Bandaragoda. They are now hospitalized.

The two police officers had not connection whatever with the security arrangements near the protest rally. The Association with a membership of over 70,000 hope that a proper investigation would be conducted into this incident.
