Seized : Navy gets tough
Rapid Action Boat Squadron (RABS) personnel, attached to the Sri Lanka Navy Vijaya RABS Headquarters in the North-western Naval Area, assisted Fisheries inspectors to arrest four persons collecting conch shells without permits off Vellal seas on August 11. Among the items seized were diving pins, diving masks, snorkels, fishing net (nylon) and conch shells. The arrested persons, along with the apprehended items were handed over to Fisheries Inspector of Kalpitiya to be produced in courts. Meanwhile Naval troops attached to SLN S Vijayain the North-western Naval Area apprehended illegal fishing nets Surukku Dals off Vellal seas the same day. First Court Martial concludes:

Fonseka cashiered

The first Court Martial yesterday convicted former Army Chief Sarath Fonseka of dabbling in politics and stripped him of all ranks, medals, honours that he won during his military career.

In line with prison reforms:

Jailer to become Rehabilitation Officer

The official designation of prison officials will be changed from Jailer to Rehabilitation Officer so as to reflect the dignity of their job, Rehabilitation and Prison Reforms Minister DEW Gunasekara said. This step will be taken in accordance with the decision of the 12 member expert panel appointed by Minister Gunasekara to make recommendations for prison reforms. The panel consists of 12 experts in various fields such as legal, prison and educational and solo social scientists.

War crimes allegations based on lies - Attorney-at-law

Senior Attorney-at-law S L Gunasekera yesterday said the allegations of war crimes in the final days of the war on terrorism are completely based on lies. He said that being a soldier does not have lesser rights than civilians. Gunasekera added that the Government risked soldiers’ lives by allowing them to enter small pockets of land where civilians and LTTE leaders were trapped in the final stages of the war on terrorism.
