Woman dies in alleged police jeep mishap

A woman pedestrian died on the spot and another injured and admitted to the Matara hospital after being knocked down by a speeding police jeep opposite the Kamburugamuwa wewa on the Galle-Matara road around 9.30 a.m. yesterday. The deceased was identified as a resident of Kamburugamuwa.

The alleged driver of the police jeep is in police custody and he was due to be produced in court yesterday. Matara police are investigating.


Ranaviru Suwanda literary contest

The closing date of entries for the Ranaviru Suwanda literary competition for members of the Armed Forces, Police and the Civil Security Force and their children by the Ranaviru Seva Authority has been extended till August 31, Authority’s Media Officer Sirimalie Liyanagama said.


Higher Education exhibition

A three-day higher education and career exhibition, Adyapana 2010 will be held at the BMICH on October 15 to 17.

This will be followed by Adyapana Kandy on October 22, 23 and 24 at Trinity College, Kandy and the Jaffna show on January 8 and 9, 2011 at the Jaffna Central College.


Renal patient seeks help

Y.B.K. Nawas Khan has been advised by Dr Mandika Wijerathna (General Surgeon) to undergo Renal Transplantation as soon as possible.

The surgery could be performed at Lanka Hospitals and the estimated cost is Rs 800,000. Kahn cannot foot the cost and requests for financial assistance.

cheques should be drawn in favour of ‘The Lanka Hospitals Corporation Ltd’.


Water interruption

Water Supply to following areas in Negombo will be interrupted for 18 hours from 6 pm today, (14) to 12 noon tomorrow (15) to facilitate improvements to the Negombo water supply scheme said the National Water Supply and Drainage Board in a press release yesterday.

Areas affected will be Negombo MC limits, Duwa Pitipana region, Katunayake-Seeduwa UC area, Katunayake Air Force camp and the Katunayake FTZ the release said.
