Drive to promote fresh milk consumption

A program to set up a network of 60 fresh cows milk sales outlets in the Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa districts has been launched by the North Central Provincial Council under the initiative of Chief Minister Berty Premalal Dissanayake.


NCP Chief Minister Berty Premalal Dissanayake who opened a fresh milk centre in one of the schools in the NCP hands over a glass of milk to a student to register the first sale.

The program is aimed to strengthen the local dairy industry which had suppressed a set back owing to the free market economic policies and build a healthy young generation by inducing specially children to consume wholesome cows milk instead of imported milk food said a press release by the NCP Chief Ministry media unit yesterday.

The release said the composition of fresh cows milk included water (78 percent), proteins (10 percent), lactose (5 percent), fatty acids (2.3 percent) and minerals (4.7 percent).

Daily consumption of 320 millilitres of pure cows milk helped physical and mental development and enabled a person to gain a strong immune system. Apart from fresh milk the milk centres opened in the NCP will sell other milk based products such as milk toffees, ice cream and yoghurt. A glass of milk is priced at Rs 20.
