Work on Iran funded electricity scheme begins

The construction work on the proposed US dollar 106.5 million Rural Electricity Scheme no 8 funded by Iran was inaugurated at Dunupothagama Yapahuwa in Kurunegala district recently.;

This is in keeping with Power and Energy Minister Patali Champika Ranawakas directions to provide electricity for villages countrywide to achieve the goal of electricity for all by 2012 initiated by Mahinda Chintana vision for the future program, a Ministry release said yesterday.

Construction work of the new project would be handled by the Suneer Company of Iran which has been named as the contractor.

The project once completed will benefit 150,000 families in the Central, Sabaragamuwa and Western Provinces and parts of the Northern Province.
