Lyon stars in Eagles’ NRL win over Tigers
A 22-point virtuoso performance from skipper Jamie Lyon steered Manly
from a slow start to down Australian National Rugby League finals’
rivals Wests Tigers 38-20 on Sunday.
The Sea Eagles scored six tries to four to improve to fourth on the
NRL standings, one spot behind the Tigers.
Centre Lyon scored two tries and kicked seven goals to send the
Tigers tumbling to their first defeat in four games.
The Sea Eagles bounced back from an 8-0 deficit and the first half
sin-binning of centre Steve Matai to take control.
Scrum-half Chris Sandow inspired South Sydney in a come-from-behind
38-28 win over the New Zealand Warriors at the Olympic stadium on
Sunday.
Sandow turned the match with some big hits and attacking play to turn
around a 20-10 halftime deficit and end a five-match winning streak for
the Warriors.
After two close defeats to the Sydney Roosters and St George
Illawarra, the Rabbitohs climbed back into the top eight in a match
where the lead changed five times.
But there was a major injury concern for Souths with their Queensland
State of Origin forward David Taylor suffering a likely broken
collarbone.
St George Illawarra lead the competition by four points after 18
rounds despite going down to a Mat Rogers drop goal in the final minute
of golden point extra time.
The Gold Coast Titans pipped St George Illawarra 11-10 on Friday to
stay in the top eight.
Penrith sunk to their third successive defeat as defending champions
Melbourne prevailed 18-10 at home on Saturday.
Storm skipper Cameron Smith kicked a sideline conversion with 12
minutes remaining and winger Matt Duffie sealed the result with a try a
minute from fulltime.
But the Storm didn’t gain anything from the match as they are banned
from earning competition points this season due to their punishment for
substantial salary cap breaches.
Jarryd Hayne’s brilliance reached a breathtaking new level as the
Parramatta superstar scored two tries within the first six minutes to
blow Canterbury off the park in a 32-16 win on Friday.
Hayne scored a memorable opening try in the first set of tackles in
the game, bouncing off one defender before swerving past another three
to complete a blinding 25-metre individual effort.
