Anouk Chitty clinches Leonard Peiris Cup

Anouk Chitty fired 7 birdies, 6 of them on the back nine to take the initial honours and the Leonard Peiris Cup with a 1 under par 71, in the Ladies preliminary round which precedes the qualifying round for the Ladies National Amateur title. Although she had the best net score of 65, the ladies format prevents any golfer from carrying away a 2nd trophy and Dinali de Zoysa with her well compiled net score of 71 was the beneficiary.

The men’s lowest gross total was carded by Waseem Rana from Pakistan who turned the corner with a 3 under par total of 35 but then felt the Colombo heat and dropped shots regularly on the back nine to limp in and end the day on a 1 over par 72. Sri Lanka’s evergreen Arshad Ahmed once again showing glimpses of his hey day turned in a steady 3 over par 74 to take the runner-up spot.

Professor Sheriffdeen decided to dissect the Ridgeways today and win the RCGC Trophy for the best net score carding 65 using his handicap of 17. Nihal Keppitipola caused him some anxiety coming in the last flight of the day needing just a par on the last hole but it was a relief for the Prof to see him bogey it and turn in a net 66 for the runner-up berth.

The results of the first day for all amateur men with handicaps up to 28 included individual and team events. The official national team players took time off to practise for the main events starting Monday which include the International Team event played over the first two rounds and individual gross and net prizes for each day. The Sri Lanka Title for the 123rd Winner will continue to be worked off after a cut-off which will see the best 40-45 players continue into round 3 and 4 at the 131 year old Royal Colombo Golf Club.
