The Japan-Lanka Friendship Association
donated one more ambulance and three fire engines worth Rs
124 million to the Army. Army Commander Lieutenant General
Jagath Jayasuriya acknowledged this donation during a
ceremony at the Army Headquarters playground. The 14-member
Japanese delegation, accompanied by Japan-Lanka Friendship
Association President Dr Lal Thilakaratne and Dr Lal
Thilakaratne Foundation Patron Ven Hanwelle Dhammaloka Thera
included Mayor for Ginan City and two more Japanese
Municipal Councillors. The visiting Japanese delegation will
meet President Mahinda Rajapaksa donate books and spectacles
to students at Sigiriya schools and visit places of
religious and cultural importance in Dambulla, Kandy and
Sigiriya. |
Fire destroys 1,000 acres in Udawalawa
Ratnapura District Corr.
A fire that broke out Sunday destroyed about 1,000 acres at Mavuara
of the Udawalawa National Park.
Park employees with the assistance of the Mavuara Army detachment
camp were able to douse the fire after much effort. They said the fire
may have been caused by a visitor to the park as there were a large
number of local and foreign visitors to the park Sunday.
Death of veteran Left leader
The LSSP yesterday announced the death of veteran left leader N S E
Perera. He was a former Treasurer of the LSSP, member of its Politbureau,
a former director of the Bank of Ceylon and Air Ceylon. He was also the
trustee of the Dr N M Perera centre at Cotta Road, Borella.
His remains lie at his residence in Pilapitiya, Kelaniya. Funeral
will take place at the Pilapitiya cemetery, Kelaniya today (27) evening.
SLLA Seminar
Sri Lanka Library Association (SLLA) is conducting a one day seminar
at the Jaffna Public Library Auditorium on July 30. ‘Libraries; Access
to Information and Empowering People’ is the theme of the seminar.
Jaffna Municipal Council Mayor will be the Chief Guest at the
inauguration ceremony. About 75 libraries from university, school and
local government sectors will attend. SLLA has organised the seminar in
collaboration with the Jaffna Public library to commemorate the Golden
Jubilee of the SLLA.
Kathamul Quran
Borella Ahadiyya School organized a Kathamul Quran ceremony of late
Al Haj Niyas Moulavi (President’s Islamic Affairs Coordinator) will be
held at Borella Ahadiyya Secretariat, Park Avenue, Colombo 8 on Sunday,
August 01st at10 a.m. Ahadiyya School Principal Al Haj Shibly Hashim
will preside. Ulamas, Ahadiyya School Principals and family members of
the Niyas Moulavi will participate at the ceremony.
Interactive exhibition
“What could be done about alcohol?” an interactive exhibition by
FORUT Sri Lanka will be held at the Colombo Public Library Auditorium
starting from today, July 27, 28 and 29 from 8.30 a.m. to 5.30 pm.
Literary Day
The Pelmadulla Provincial Literary Day will be held on July 31 at the
Gankanda College Hall.
Pelmadulla, Provincial Secretary Rohana Senaratna will preside and
give away the prizes and certificates to the winners, the report added.
Death of Erine Senanayake
The death occurred of Erine Senanayake (90) of Kelaniya. She is the
wife of former Trade and Commerce Minister and MP for Dambadeniya RG
Senanayake.
She was an active member of the Sri Lankan Freedom Party. She was a
close friend of Former Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike.
She had been the Chief SLFP Organizer of the Kelaniya electorate.
Funeral takes place on Wednesday at the Borella Cemetery.
STF helping in dengue eradication program
The Police Special Task Force led by its Commander DIG K.M.L.
Sarathchandra is actively contributing towards the dengue eradication
program in areas coming under the purview of their camps countrywide.
Officers attached to STF camps at Kalubowila, Rajagiriya and Gonahena
conducted a special campaign to clear mosquito breeding places in the
Lady Ridgeway Children’s Hospital, Colombo on Saturday under the
supervision of SSP Dr Balasuriya.
Houses on verge of collapse
P. Rajaratnam in Nuwara Eliya
Twelve houses at the Nuwara Eliya Estate are on the verge of collapse
due to heavy rains and gales experienced over the weeks. It is learnt
that officials had visited the identified area and warned the management
of the Estate to evacuate the occupants to other suitable areas. |
