Job seekers cheated

A former female teacher who had allegedly cheated several foreign job
seekers for several lakhs of rupees promising jobs in Canada was
arrested by officers of the Kandy Police Special Crime Unit on Thursday.
Investigations revealed that the suspect who had worked at two
leading Kandy schools is now under interdiction for alleged
malpractices. She and her husband had been hauled before court earlier
too for defrauding job seekers by running an employment agency.
Motorbicycle thieves nabbed
Three suspects who robbed motorbicycles from Dambulla, Kantale, Kandy
and Peradeniya were arrested by Matale Police Criminal Investigation
Branch officers. The motorcycles were found in Ampara, Ambanpola,
Kurunegala, Matale and Ukuwela.
Investigations are on.
Susan George Pulimood Memorial Oration
The annual Susan George Pulimood Memorial Oration of Visakha
Vidyalaya will be held today at 5.15pm at the school’s Jeremias Dias
Hall.
The Oration will be delivered by Kelaniya University, Faculty of
Medicine Senior Professor Ira Thabrew who is also visiting
Professor/Research Fellow, IBMBB, University of Colombo. Oration will be
‘Nature’s Secrete for the benefit of Human Health’.
Abducted labourer released after one week

A estate labourer who had been abducted while working in an estate in
Deniyaya area has later been released after a week. This was revealed
when he made a complaint to the Deniyaya Police after his release by his
abductors. Deniyaya Police have arrested two persons regarding the
incident and investigating.
Festival of Choirs
The annual Festival of Choirs will be held on August 1 at the
Cathedral of Christ the Living Saviour, Bauddhaloka Mawatha Colombo 07
at 4.30 pm.
Nine choirs are participating and the Chief Guest will be National
Catholic Social Communications Centre Director Rev Fr Benedict Joseph.
Concert
The Past Pupils’ Association of Dharmapala Vidyalaya, Pannipitiya
will present Ravi Sara Savi 2 experimental dance-drum symphony and
concert of percussionist and modernist choreographer Ravibandu
Vidyapathi on July 31 at Ananda College Kularatne Hall at 6.30 p.m.
Pinkama
A pinkama to mark the 71st anniversary of the Bank of Ceylon
organized by the Bank of Ceylon Eksath Bauddha Sangamaya will be held at
the first floor of the Bank of Ceylon head office at Bank of Ceylon
Mawatha, Colombo 1 on July 30 and 31.
The program includes an all night pirith ceremony on July 30 followed
by a Sanghika dana on July 31.
Book launch
The launch of the book Bridge for Peace Through Literature will be
held at the National Library auditorium, Colombo today.
Rosa Kumari and Kurulu Patiya which were translated by Thinakaran
journalist M. S. Fahim will also be launched at this ceremony.
Prize-giving
The annual prize distribution of Sadachara Daham Pasala will be held
at the Sri Anandarama Viharaya Colombo 10 on July 24 at 2 p.m. Ven Dr
Brahmanawatte Seevali Anunayake Thera of the Sri Lanka Amarapura Maha
Sangha Sabha will preside.
Pinkama
A herd of cattle valued at Rs 800,000 destined for slaughter will be
released at a pinkama held at the Bauddhayathanaya, Watarappala Road Mt.
Lavinia under the patronage of Ven. Diviyagala Yasassi Thera on July 25
at 10 a.m.
The released cattle will be handed over to a selected group of
farmers at a ceremony at Welamitiyawa Galewela on July 27 at 10 a.m.
Rail-bus service
The new Polonnaruwa-Batticaloa Rail-Bus service will be inaugurated
by Transport Minister Kumara Welgama at a ceremony at the Kaduruwela
Railway station today at 10 a.m.
Cultural Festival
The annual cultural festival of the Thirappane Divisional Secretariat
Division will be held at the Alagollewa St. Anthony’s Maha Vidyalaya
grounds today.
Meeting
Minister Basil Rajapaksa will preside the Nuwara Eliya District
Agricultural Committee meeting today at the district Kachcheri.
