NEI to get university status

The Government will upgrade the National Education Institute (NEI) at Maharagama to University status soon.

Education Minister Bandula Gunawardena said several international organizations including UNESCO and the World Bank have assured support for this proposal.

He said the Government has focused on how the quality of education can be enhanced by providing human resources to the NEI under the new national education policy.

"We will provide human resources to the NEI to conduct degree and Postgraduate degree courses in the NEI soon," he added. The Minister also said the competitive examination to recruit English medium graduate teachers for the National schools will be held in 57 centres on July 18 in Colombo.

Over 8,500 candidates with a degree in English medium have applied for posts of teachers in national schools.
