Youth sports festival in progress

The district level competitions of the 22nd National Youth Sports Festival organized by the National Youth Services Council is in progress. The Colombo district competitions were held recently at Piliyandala Central College grounds and the championship title was clinched by Moratuwa Youth Clubs Provincial Federation and the runner-up was Homagama Provincial Youth Clubs Federation.

There were 40 events, team games, track and field events included in the program.

Nearly 2,000 sportsmen and sportswomen from 13 provincial youth clubs federation took part at the sports festival.

The winners of all the events are qualified for the 22nd National Youth Sports Festival to be held in Jaffna in October 2010.

The results:

Netball (men): 1. Homagama, 2. Kolonnawa.

Netball (women): 1. Homagama, 2. Kolonnawa.

Football: 1. Moratuwa, 2. Kaduwela.

Cricket (softball - men): 1. Maharagama, 2. Seetawaka.

Cricket (women): 1. Maharagama, 2. Padukka.

Kabadi (women): 1. Homagama.

Elle (men):1. Kolonnawa, 2. Maharagama.

Elle (women): 1. Kolonnawa.

Volleyball (men): 1. Kesbewa, 2. Homagama.

Volleyball (women): 1. Homagama, 2. Kolonnawa.

1,500m (women): 1. Shasini Nimesha (Homagama), 2. Shiromi Priyadharshika (Padukka), 3. Shashikala Maduwanthi (Maharagama).

1,500m (men): 1. Kamal Perera (Maharagama), 2. Tharindu Dharshana (Kesbewa), 3. Rohan Perera (Kolonnawa).

1,500m - over 20 (women): 1. Lakshini Navaratne (Padukka).

Walking race (women) (3,000m): 1. Elmini Kumari (Homagama).

Walking race (women) (5,000m): 1. P. K. N. Ranathunga (Seetawaka).

Triple jump (women): 1. P. Anushika (Kolonnawa).

Triple jump (men): 1. Ashen Chintaka (Moratuwa), 2. Piumal Maduranga Padukka), 3. Viraj Shanika (Seetawaka).

Long jump (men): 1. Rumesh Chaturanga (Moratuwa), 2. Sujeewa Premalal (Maharagama), 3. Rumesh Lakmal (Moratuwa).

High jump (men): 1. Sarath Nadeera (Maharagama), 2. Piumal Madusanka (Padukka), 3. Roshan Pushpakumara (Kaduwela).

Discus throw (men): 1. Shachin Maduranga (Homagama), 2. Chaturanga Perera (Moratuwa), 3. Nishantha Perera (Kesbewa).

Overall champions - Moratuwa. Runner-up - Homagama.

The Chairman and Director General of the NYSC Lalith Pium Perera was the chief guest at the awards presentation ceremony.
