NYSC Sports Festival in Jaffna

“The liberated North and East will join the South at the 22nd National Youth Sports Festival 2010 and as a concept of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, the Minister of Youth Affairs Dullas Alahapperuma has decided to hold the 22nd National Youth Sports festival in Jaffna in October,” said the Chairman / Director General of the NYSC Lalith Pium Perera at the inaugural ceremony of the team games of the 22nd National Youth Sports Festival held at the National Youth Centre grounds Maharagama recently.

The Secretary to the Ministry S. S. Hewapathirana inaugurated the team games competitions of the 22nd National Youth Sports Festival. The significant feature of this sports festival is that after 30 long year’s all the districts in the North and East have sent teams for the festival.

Representing all the 25 districts are nearly 1,000 sportsmen and sportswomen. The competitions of the team games kabadi, cricket (softball), elle, netball, volleyball and football will be held at the National Youth Centre, grounds, Maharagama, from July 4 to August 1, 2010.

The finals of the team games cross country race, cycle races and the track and field event will be held at the National Youth Sports Festival to be held in October 2010 at Jaffna.

The acrobatics items of the dancing group of the NYSC added much colour and grace to the opening ceremony.
