CMC details six officers to monitor garbage disposal

The Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) has employed six officers to
monitor garbage disposal in six divisions of the city in its latest
measure to keep the city clean, CMC Commissioner Badrani Jayawardene
told the Daily News yesterday.
She said the new move was being implemented in collaboration with
Police and around 100 people have been produced in courts for not
keeping their environment clean. There are 47 wards in the Colombo City
within the six administrative divisions. We have employed six persons
but the number would be doubled in the near future. These garbage
monitoring inspectors would do three rounds per day in one
administrative division, she said.
The CMC spends more than three rupees for clearing one kilogram of
garbage to keep the city clean and spends millions of rupees for that
purpose. City dwellers should be disciplined to keep the city clean and
save the funds being spent to clear the garbage thrown on the street
corners haphazardly. These people do not realize they are polluting
their environment, she said.
The CMC and Police educated the people of the city through a public
address system last Sunday about the new system and warned the people
not to litter streets, she said.
