Role of the navies gained prominence - Admiral Nirmal Verma

The current geopolitical environment of the globalized world constabulary and diplomatic role of the Navy have gained prominence. Navies today have an important role in maintaining oceanic governance for protection of global trade and commerce, Indian Navy Commander Admiral Nirmal Verma said.

The commissioning ceremony for around 55 Navy officers was held at the Naval Base in Trincomalee yesterday at a sunset passing out parade. It was the first time a foreign Navy Commander had attended a passing out parade.

Indian Commander Verma said Globalization is cutting across national boundaries and leading to the evolution of linkages between culture, economies and peoples.

This growing economic integration is evident from increasing trade inter-dependence of nations. With increasing interlinkage of economy and oceans today not expanses of water that divide continents but maritime highways that link nations.

“Navies are expected to provide succour in isolation and will have to coordinate in overcoming global maritime challenges. These are imperatives that have led to increased interaction and cooperation among the navies,” he added.

He reiterated to take full advantage of the knowledge to improve their own. Show loyalty and demonstrating integrity is everything that the Navy can do.

He noted that the Navy should be prepared to meet the tremendous challenges that they should meet in the future context. The great training that they received will drive them to face any challenges.

Indian Navy Commander Admiral Nirmal Verma journeyed with Navy Commander Vice Admiral Thisara Samarasinghe in the Admiralty Craft around the Trincomalee Naval Base yesterday evening prior to the Naval Officers sunset passing out. The Admiralty Craft which was designed for the VVIPs by the local sailors in Welisara boatyard.
