Belarus honours Ernesto Che Guevara
Belarus: More than 100 Belarussian and Latin Americans,
including Cubans, celebrated the 82nd birthday on Tuesday of
Cuban-Argentine guerrilla Commander Ernesto Che Guevara de la Serna.
A political and cultural gala at the House of Friendship with the
Peoples was attended by diplomats including the ambassadors of
Venezuela, Vietnam and Cuba.
Venezuelan Ambassador Americo Diaz Nuñez stressed the value of Che’s
political and revolutionary heritage for Latin America and the meaning
of his birth, on June 14, 1928.
Cuban Ambassador Alfredo Nieves Portuondo said Che lives among those
who are fighting for the release of Ramón Labañino, René González,
Fernando González, Gerardo Hernández and Antonio Guerrero, the Cuban
Five, held in US prisons since 1998.
The Five were given long prison sentences for warning the Cuban
people of the anti-Cuba terrorist plots originating in the southern US
state of Florida.
During the gala, a documentary film was screened depicting key
episodes of Che’s life as a guerrilla fighter for Cuba’s final
independence and that of other countries. Belarusian musicians played
Latin American music as a tribute.
