Daring bank robbery thwarted

A security officer on duty at Merchant Bank of Sri Lanka (MBSL) at Kalutara prevented a daring daylight robbery and apprehended an underworld thief Wednesday at around 9 a.m. according to a bank spokesman.

When the bank opened for business at about 8.30 a.m. this person had gained admission to the Bank in the guise of a customer and had queried the security guard, P. Sumith Upendra of Watchguard Security and Investigations regarding a bank employee and suddenly aimed a pistol at his head and was trying to gain access to the cash counter.

The security guard who was proficient in martial arts had overpowered him and knocked him down to the floor.

the robber was handed over to the Kalutara South Police Station where it came to light that he is wanted by the police for several previous offences.
