Lankan scientists discover new natural compound

A natural chemical compound which can increase the motion and strength of human semen has been discovered by a team of Sri Lankan scientists using an extraction derived from a red algae extensively growing in the Barbarin coral reef in Beruwala.

The Technology and Research Ministry said natural chemical compounds which can strengthen semen is very rare.

The new compound discovered by the Sri Lankan team led by scientist Dr. G.A.S. Premakumara is the eighth such natural compound in the world.

This new S-Act-1 chemical compound discovered by Dr. Premakumara and his team is 28 times more powerful than the normal Pentoxuyphyllin drug which is clinically used at present. The Ministry said this new finding can be used in reproduction clinics to increase fertility. Although a large portion of normal human semen is subject to damage during cold storage with the use of Nitrogen the new S-Act-1 semen compound is able to maintain its quality and strength during storage.

As such it could be successfully used for semen banks in future, the Ministry said in a press release.
