English medium classes in eight more schools

Students of eight more schools will have the opportunity to pursue their education in English Medium for the Advanced Level Examination, 2012.

English medium classes will commence in the following schools from next month onwards: Seetawaka MV, Avissawella, Hanwella Rajasinghe MV, Homagama M.V., Maharagama MV. in Colombo; Ratnavali BMV, Bandaranaike MV in Gampaha and Tissa MV in Kalutara.

Five hundred and fifty four graduate teachers, who themselves have received their tertiary education in the English medium, will be enrolled to curb the lack of proficient Advanced Level English teachers in the system.

The ‘Garu Vishishta Guru Sanchitaya’, is another initiative to be implemented soon to develop the standards of English medium and overall, secondary education. This process emulates the success of the Daham Pasal system, with its volunteer teacher base. The ‘Sanchitaya’ will comprise of intellectuals-doctors, engineers, lawyers, retired teachers etc. Classes will be conducted for a minimum two hours a week, teaching conducted within school hours, after school hours and during the weekend. The program will be free of charge.
