UN warns Darfur situation worsening

UN: United Nations warned Thursday of the deterioration of the situation in Darfur that can affect the modest improvements it achieved in recent months.

A press rease issued by the Security Council by head of the UN-African Union (AU) joint forces Ibrahim Bambari in a session to analyze the conflict in Sudan. The official acknowledged the positive development of the situation in some aspects but pointed out this development is threatened by the persistent armed clashes between Government troops and armed groups.

The peace process has progressed, but there is still a deep sense of mistrust that keeps some parties involved in the issue out of that process, Gambari said. He outlined the negotiations took part in the Qatari Capital between the Sudanese Government and rebel organizations and the understandings undersigned by the authorities with the opposition movements such as Justice and Equality (JEM) and Liberation and Justice (MLJ).

However, he said, a final peace agreement could not be set on March 15 due to the refusal of the JEM to continue the talks. United Nations, Prensa Latina
