UN warns Darfur situation worsening
UN: United Nations warned Thursday of the deterioration of the
situation in Darfur that can affect the modest improvements it achieved
in recent months.
A press rease issued by the Security Council by head of the
UN-African Union (AU) joint forces Ibrahim Bambari in a session to
analyze the conflict in Sudan. The official acknowledged the positive
development of the situation in some aspects but pointed out this
development is threatened by the persistent armed clashes between
Government troops and armed groups.
The peace process has progressed, but there is still a deep sense of
mistrust that keeps some parties involved in the issue out of that
process, Gambari said. He outlined the negotiations took part in the
Qatari Capital between the Sudanese Government and rebel organizations
and the understandings undersigned by the authorities with the
opposition movements such as Justice and Equality (JEM) and Liberation
and Justice (MLJ).
However, he said, a final peace agreement could not be set on March
15 due to the refusal of the JEM to continue the talks. United Nations,
