Ranjan ANANDAPPA
Spearheaded by a vigorous forwards display CR and FC defeated
Havelocks Sports Club by 32 points (three goals, one try, two penalties)
to 8 (one try and a penalty) in a lopsided Caltex ‘A’ Division League
rugby match at Longden Place yesterday.
The winners led 18-8 at the breather.

The game was confined to the forwards of either side and the Red
Shirts got the better of it with their superior display. Henry Terrence,
Anuja Perera, Ishan Noor, Danushka Perera and skipper Dushanth Lewke
played tirelessly.
Their back division too combined well and the Havelocks had no other
option rather than to defend. The Havies did well to restrict CR’s
scoring through some hard tackling.
CR and FC opened scoring in the fourth minute of the game through a
Reza Mubarak penalty. For the Havelocks Senthil Kumar missed a penalty,
but put over one to equalise the score. In the 25th minute Mubarak put
CR in the lead with a 25-metre penalty kick (CR 6-3).
The winners however, got their act together when Vishwamithra
Jayasinghe ran 30 metres to give the finishing touches to a three
quarter move. Mubarak converted.
CR further went on to consolidate when winger Ashan de Costa scored
an unconverted try off a maul working the blind side running
unchallenged to make it 18-3.
Havelocks kicker Senthil Kumar missed a good 43-metre penalty kick by
a whisker as the ball struck the cross bar. But just before the short
whistle Havelocks No 8 Diren Warnakulasuriya scored the only try off a
second phase move.

CR and FC completely dominated the second half and went on to plant
two more tries.
Minutes after resumption winger Ashan de Costa covered good ground to
touch down by the corner flag and Reza Mubarak added the extra points
with a beautiful kick (CR 25-8).
Number eight Dushath Lewke put the issue beyond doubt scoring the
final try by the corner flag midway in the second half and Reza Mubarak
made a spectacular conversion.
