Army assistance for flood victims

Nearly 2,000 Army personnel have been assigned to provide relief to
flood victims in Colombo, Kalutara, Puttalam and Gampaha districts.
The estuary at Dikowita, Wattala that was blocked by sand
dunes was opened for water from the Muturajawela, Wattala,
Ja-Ela and Kandana areas to flow down to the sea. Here

Some members of the troops are assisting in the preparation of cooked
meals, construction of alternative temporary houses and clearing of
clogged and water logged culverts, canals, water ways and other
irrigational structures that obstruct the flow of water.
Nearly 100 soldiers with the support of Navy personnel removed
floating logs, branches, trees and all garbage in the Hamilton canal at
Hendala. The estuary at Kerawalapitiya was also expanded by troops with
civilian help.
Troops also distributed medicine among victims housed in temporary
shelters. Troops also distributed over 5,000 packets of lunch among the
stranded people in Kolonnawa. Troops also drained water near the
Dandugama bridge enabling vehicles to pass. Ten Sri Lanka Army personnel
are in Colombo and Kalutara to coordinate work.
