One dead, 45 injured in bus mishap

A school boy was killed and 45 other students injured when a school bus collided head on with another bus in Wagala, Theldeniya yesterday morning.

Police spokesman SP Prashantha Jayakody said the private bus bearing number 50-7551 transporting schoolchildren crashed with another bus near 28th mile post along the Kandy- Mahiyangana Road around 6.45 a m. He said the seven-year-old school boy was killed after admission to Kandy hospital.

The injured were admitted to Kandy and Theldeniya hospitals. Of them, 20 were schoolchildren.

The deceased was identified as Sandasiri Danuwila from Dumbara Vidyalaya, Theldeniya. Most students were from Theldeniya National School and Dumbara Vidyalaya. Theldeniya police are investigating.


Lorry plunges down precipice, four killed, 28 injured

Four passengers died and 28 others were injured when a lorry plying from Rikillagaskada to Hanguranketha skidded off the road near a Government School at Madawanwala and plunged down a 200 metre precipice. The incident occurred at around 5.00 p.m yesterday.

According to Police Spokesman SP Prashantha Jayakody, the injured were admitted to Hanguranketha and Rikillagaskada Hospitals.

Three out of eight passengers who were admitted to the Rikillagaskada District Hospital were later transferred to the Kandy General Hospital as they were in a critical condition.
